I’ve been wondering for some time if I can change Ubuntu’s login sound. Not that I don’t like the tribe-ish sound. I actually snap my fingers with it sometimes. Maybe I just grew tired of it, errr, not a good phrase. XD

Of course, Google helped me with this task, and it brought me to this post.

It’s just easy! These are the steps:

First, go to System->Preferences->Startup Applications. I already have the feeling that it has something to do with the startup thingy, I’m just too lazy to search for it, or even check it. You’ll see this screen:

Startup Applications Screen

Search for GNOME Login Sound. I don’t know if the same applies if you’re using KDE instead of GNOME, or does it matter? I’ll update this, when I’ve tried KDE. I need to install it first.

Then, if you don’t want to hear anything at all, just untick the checkbox and choose Close. That’s it. But if you want to edit the sound, choose Edit. A dialog box will appear, something like this:

Edit Startup Program of GNOME Login Sound

In the command field, you should find this:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id=”desktop-login” --description=”GNOME Login”

First option is to change desktop-login to the filename of the sound that you want. In my case, it’s orange. After that, copy the sound file to:

/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo

But wait! Be sure to use an OGG sound file. I tried playing an MP3 file in command line and it said that the “file or data is corrupt.” And also, don’t forget the magic word sudo while copying it.

The second option is to use this one:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play -f "/home/rixmaestro/orange.ogg"

where the quoted thing after the -f is the path of your sound file. Here, you don’t need to copy the sound file. Just be sure that you will not delete or change the location of the said sound file.

And that’s it! Choose Save, of course, then close. Log out from your account then log in again to test it.

I hope you’ll enjoy your new login sound! :D
